When I had a glance at the press release/essay that
came with this CD I was half tempted to just copy it
out as St Gregory Orange seemed to pretty much review
it himself. As he puts it this CD is 'A Kind-Of-Pop-Doctronica
record. Full of ghosts, and half remembered, half slurred apologies'.
I imagine by now you’re thinking what the hell is that? I’d love
to spell it out for you but this certainly isn’t another four-piece
climbing up the slippery pole left by the Arctic Monkeys. This
is strange, un-pigeonholed music and unfortunately
the (extremely long) press release won’t tell you what it is
and neither will this review. The only way to fully understand
this music is to have a listen yourself.
I’ll have a bash at trying to explain it though. Things We Said In Bedrooms
is an electronic whirlwind of haunting noises and bleak sound effects
over perculiar melodies and dark, personal lyrics. It is conceptual
music that mutates familiar sounds and tries to create 'completely emersive
environments, soundscapes [and] scenes to imaginary films'.
The ball started rolling when St Greg was asked to make the music for a
mate’s short film. He accepted the challenge happily and succeeded in doing so.
However, after the film was finished St Greg became so obsessed with his new-found
craft that he quit his day job and spent hours at his computer creating
this bizarre gothic, electronic madness.
I have to say that although I like the fact that St Greg's music is non-conformist,
and he himself appears to be a unique sort of mad-professor, I had a constant
little niggle at the back of my head whispering ‘is it all a bit pretentious?’
On that note I’ll say no more. If you are intrigued check him out.
