Performance - Sheffield Gig / Debut Single

PERFORMANCE
Debut single: 'Dotted Line' / 'I Know'

From Manchester, Performance are the throbbing pulse of underground clubland, the muscle of rock's cutting edge and the heart and soul of the purest pop. Best friends Joe Cross and Joe Stretch arrived in Manchester at the end of the 20th Century, high and hungry on influences from The Velvet Underground to Charles Bukowski.

Sisters Laura and Billie Marsden grew up in Rochdale and spent their childhood in bands together that fizzed with pop excitement and street glamour.

When Joe and Joe were banned from busking their 'indie songs' inside the city's Café Pop one time too many, they collided with the girls and caused one of the chemical reactions that forms all the best pop'n'roll.

Together, they bought a battered MC505, became Performance and started turning out effortlessly cool but warmly human songs like the riveting punk snarl of their debut 'Dotted Line', its icily melancholic flipside 'I Know', and future club classic 'Female Gaze'.

With sexual chemistry by the Human League, beats by New Order, hair by each other, and clothes by Cancer Research of Withington, Performance are already masters of their hometown 'Manctronica' scene, and have packed out shows in London and Glasgow.

Following their November 'Non-Stop Electronic Cabaret' UK tour with fellow electro pioneers Pink Grease and Chikinki, the band are playing their first live date of 2004 at the Zero nightclub, Sheffield, alongside Razor Stiletto.

Their debut single, 'Dotted Line' / 'I Know' is released on February 9th 2004 on Guilty Feet Recordings.

Insomniacz presents "The Cammo Ball"
The Corporation Nightclub, £10.00
29th February 2004 (2.00pm till 12 midnight)

February 29th sees our return to Sheffield. Our last event in Sheffield was our 4th Birthday Spectacular in September.

This event is the long awaited Grand-opening to our themed events across the country. The dress code for the clubbers attending is that, when they present themselves to the club they will have to include sort of Camouflage clothing on to gain entrance. Last year the clubbers flocked in their hundreds to this event. The event looked awesome, everyone was partying in Camouflage. The club owners and staff were amazed at how much effort the Insomniacz patrons put into their appearance.

This year the Djs spinning on the decks all have rankings. Corporal Savage, General Glazby, Sergeants ilogik, Gray & Ian M, 2nd Lieutenant karim, Flight Majors Vane & Andy M all make an appearance and cater for the army of Harderfaster Generation attending.

Want to Play a Festival?

From: Ellen [phreaky_frog@hotmail.com]
Closing Date: 15 Feb 2004
Received: 25 Dec 2003

Want To Play A Festival?

Ever wondered what your band would sound like outdoors? Ever wanted to walk onto the stage at Castle Donnington for 'Monster's of Rock' and feel the feedback from that 50 feet high stack amp?

It may not be Castle Donnington, but the Dinnington Music Festival provides bands not yet as big as Iron Maiden to take their music to the outdoor entertainments market.

The event organisers are looking for bands to perform at the festival on July 3rd 2004. Places are available on the main stage, which is a Radio One roadshow stage.

If you are interested in this great opportunity then email phreaky_frog@hotmail.com

ADDED NOTE: The closing date for bands to apply is 15th February 2004, so get your applications in early!!!

  • Liane Carroll Trio (Fri 16 Jan, Non-Pots, £8/£5)
Featuring Liane Carroll (voice and piano), Roger Carey (bass), Mark Fletcher (drums).
One of the finest contemporary vocalists on the jazz scene, Liane Carroll has been performing professionally as a pianist and singer from the age of 15. Don't miss her astonishing blend of the jazz standard repertoire with heartfelt passionate soul. Her latest CD "Billy No Mates" was released in Sept 2003 to great critical acclaim.

  • Stan Tracey Trio & Nigel Hitchcock (Sat 24 Jan, Crucible Studio, £12/£8)
Featuring Stan tracey (piano), Andy Cleyndert (bass), Clark Tracey (drums), Nigel Hitchcock (alto sax).
The 'Godfather' of the UK Jazz scene, Stan received a lifetime achievement award at the 2002 BBC Radio Jazz Awards - the latest in na long list of accolades that have marked a distinguished and remarkable career spanning five decades of flourishing creativity. Stan's capricious paino playing combines the percussive melody of Thelonious Monk with the robust lyricism of Ellington in a highly idiosyncratic style. Clark and Andy are both highly accomplished players who, through many years of playing together, have established a remarkable intuitive rapport with Stan. For this concert the trio is joined by Nigel Hitchcock, who burst onto the scene a few years ago, heralded as one of the most gifted natural improvisors Britain has produced.

  • Simon Purcell Quintet (Thu 29 Jan, Non-Pots, £8/£5)
Featuring Simon Purcell (piano), Julian Siegel (tenor sax), Chris Batchelor (trumpet), Steve Watts (bass), Gene Calderazzo (drums).
A highly accomplished jazz pianist, Simon Purcell occasionally leaves his commitments at the Guildhall School of Music (Professor of jazz piano and improvisation), to return to performing. He will be appearing in the stellar company of a dream rhythm section and an outstanding front line.

  • Mick Hutton's Boat Rockers (Fri 6 Feb, Non-Pots, £8/£5)
Featuring Mick Hutton (bass, synth, steel drum, cuatro & tuba), Mark Edwards (piano), Andy Panayi (tenor sax), Paul Robinson (drums).
Composer and virtuoso bass player, Mick Hutton leads a group that will feature his own compositions as well as some Mingus and Ellington. Mick will also display his multi-instrumental skills that include synths, steel drums, cuatro and tuba.

  • Will Vinson Quintet (Fri 20 Feb, Non-Pots, £8/£5)
Featuring Will Vinson (saxophones), Tom Cawley (piano), Chris Higginbottom (drums), Phil Donkin (bass), Sandra Hempel (guitar).
Born in London and now a New York resident, where he plays regularly in the City's jazz clubs, Will Vinson brings his own band to Sheffield for the first time. This is what the Guardian's John Fordham had to say about him: "Spectacular technique ... delivering superb solos of rugged, leathery sounds, turning into mellifluous high notes ... secure control and storming energy reminiscent of Bobby Watson."

  • Urban Jazz Ensemble (Fri 27 Feb, Non-Pots, £10/£7)
Featuring Stephen Keogh (drums), Jeremy Brown (bass), Peter King (alto sax), Michael Buckley (tenor sax & flute), Gilad Atzmon (sax & Middle Eastern instruments), Kevin Dean (trumpet), Edward Simon (piano).
Founded by drummer Stephen Keogh and bassist Jeremy Brown, this new band has an American Pianist, a Canadian bass player and two of the most famous names in British jazz. It will feature new compositions and familiar songs from a very unfamiliar angle. Do not miss this one.
