Bringing in the May at Kelham Island
Monday 2 May will see the 10th annual Mayfest at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield.
This modest one-day event has proved enduringly popular with many local folk enthusiasts
who don't wish to brave the traffic jams and crowds associated with larger events much
further afield. The SRFAN [South Riding Folk Arts Network]
will pack as much as possible into the available 6 and a half hours, and we will all keep
our fingers crossed for another sunny Bank Holiday on which to sample the excellent real ales
from the Fat Cat, and enjoy the music.
This year there will be, in addition to the regular features, a concert in the main exhibition hall
featuring local band Treebeard, songstress Judy Dunlop, award winning young band
Kerfuffle and multi-instrumentalist and singer Pete Coe.
Dance teams confirmed for the courtyard include Boggarts Breakfast, the Sheffield Giants,
and Stone Monkey Sword Dancers. The Folk Club Showcase will once again give an
opportunity to the many local folk clubs to promote themselves through their excellent floor
singers and resident musicians.
As ever, the running tune session will be in the bar, alongside the indefatigable Stephen and Diane
from the Fat Cat. The Network information and sales point, and other stalls, will also be there
in support. If you get hungry, Alan Farrar will be delighted to see you in the museum café
where freshly prepared food will be available.
All we need is the weather - and chiefly YOURSELVES - so come along and enjoy another
excellent day.
