What was to become Nantucket formed, or vaguely coalesced, rather, in May of 2003, after Pete went to see Miyamoto:
they seemed to be having so much fun, he wanted in on the action.
Fortunately, his brother Ben, with whom he'd been doodling songs and things for aeons, was friends with a musical
maestro, Steve. Steve was fed up of playing in jazz cover bands on a Sunday night and so decided to make all those
teachers who said he'd never write a decent tune to put their words on a plate, and eat them. And then put his notes
on a plate, and eat them too. And then put his gorgeous three-part harmonies in a big baguette with some cheddar,
and maybe ketchup if you're feeling risqué - and gobble them down like the garlic-eating doom monkeys they
know they are.
Once the initial line-up was finalised, and a jam session initiated, it became clear that the acoustic raison d'être
ofor the as-yet-unnamed band needed supplementing with a large dab of rhythm - and perhaps a degree of glamour. So a
female bassist was moulded from clay and bits of heather, and left in the fridge overnight while the boys drank beer and
wore bras on their head.
That having failed, they asked Sarah, devout anti-faffer and Silverseed groupie, who'd never even picked up a four
stringed instrument in her life, to have a go. And she did.
May turned to summer, and the weekly (ish) jams actually turned into some real songs and a real gig! The debut of
this untitled acoustic band was low-key, a teacher's retirment do - but it was a start.
Summer turned into autumn, and the band abandoned music in favour of coming up with a decent name - far more
important than the songs, you'll agree.
And lo, for closely guarded reasons, Nantucket was eventually born - and a second gig was eventually procured.
This time it was at Highcliffe Club, and went down a storm (particularly the impromptu John Denver covers).
Nantucket are now attempting to find time to cut a demo in order to procure more gigs - but if anyone out
there wants a harmonic dose of easy on the ear tunes, then just give us a shout.
