Based in Sheffield, The Thinking Reeds '...is the musical vehicle for singer-songwriter
Iain Kelly and acts as a pole to fly his ragged flag'. Writing all eleven tracks on the
album and playing 80% of the instruments, including vocals he certainly has talent! The
Thinking Reeds aren't your standard guitar, bass, drums, vocals outfit - the songs are
somewhat orchestral in nature and have a great deal of depth, although well worth a
listen for fans of any genre.
The title track A Sailor Me (track five) is my personal favourite, slightly more upbeat
than the songs that precede it, it features an interesting bassline with chords from the
guitar and an excellent vocal line with heartfelt lyrics. This is all backed up by some
excellent snare drum brush work! The female choir voices in certain parts are a nice touch.
Another highlight is track 8, The Thinking Song. Featuring a haunting harpsichord
intro, this song immediately catches your attention. This song is wonderfully composed and
arranged, and has a beautifully dark/tone - if you have a habit of crying to songs (not me
personally) then this would surely get you going! An awesome song!
The task of picking out more songs that stand out is almost impossible - they're all so good!
Iain has bags and bags of talent and songwriting prowess! If you haven't checked out The
