The New Associates are a four-piece outfit from Sheffield (although originating
from all over the UK). Their 2006 3 song demo is up for review here, so here goes...
Track one entitled 'Ask Yourself Why' kicks off with a catchy bassline, which promises
to develop into a very good song - a promise which the song fulfils. The chilled
out indie chorus has a hooky vocal melody and makes a good contrast to the preceding
sections. The breakdown in the middle section is very well arranged and really gets
your head nodding. The song ends with the same riff as it began - an ideal ending
to a good song. The only criticism I have of this song is the drums in the chorus
seem to be a little too much for its chilled out nature (too much snare drum), but
otherwise a top song!
'Purple Lace' is track two and is a more upbeat punk-influenced song and is sure
to be popular on the dancefloor at gigs. The pre-chorus has excellent backing vocals
and leads into a chorus that is sure to get people singing along "Hey, hey, hey...".
Another top song, which shows that the band can punk it up!
Finishing off this demo nicely is 'Parties & Party Timers', probably the most poppy of
the three songs, but also the best (in my opinion). Vocal heavy, this song shows off
the vocal talent the band possess, and shows good musicianship through excellent
arrangement and dynamic range.
Overall, The New Associates have produced an excellent demo, sure to appeal to a wide
audience due to the band's varied influences. Worth a listen!
