This three track demo contains extremely catchy punk-pop numbers by the female-fronted
Sheffield band Dangerlust.
First track King Of The World gives us vocalist Rachel's most snarling moments resembling
a feminine Johnny Rotten - "can you look at your life and tell me your proud of what you've
done?" - before a big riff chorus takes over from the bassline and guitarist Mikey joins in
with sinister backing vocals. Excellent overlapping melodies and an air-guitar-around-your-bedroom
solo make this track a rather enjoyable affair.
Something New's palm muted verses and dark interlude bring an altogether heavier feel to the next
track but the band's knack for infectious vocal lines does not elude them and as the backing vocal
strains to tell the listener "now it's our turn" you probably don't exactly want to argue otherwise.
Melodies are definitely this band's main weapon and their attempt at a punk-pop epic Lie does not
disappoint, recalling Blink 182's "Adam's Song" in the process. Rachel's strong vocals resemble
Sarah Cracknell of St. Etienne and are definitely a highlight but that is to her credit rather than
the band's detriment as they are strong throughout.
It's difficult to think of many bands from this genre that can top Dangerlust for either talent or
just sheer enjoyment. The only problem is that their destiny may be decided largely by luck in a
market that is, seemingly, rather full already. If they could just find one more gear then we would
have something very special indeed.
